Dr. Moyes’ Ministry to Orphans (In His Own Words):
In September of this year I returned to Haiti with a group associated with C3Missions, an organization committed to building homes for abandoned children around the world. When we visited the NWHCM orphanage in Port au Paix my eyes were opened in a new way. I’ve been to the orphanage before and seen how happy and well mannered the children are. They’ll steal your heart. This time I saw an aging facility in the slum of the city. 150 children plus care givers living on two acres surrounded by twenty foot walls to keep the evil outside is not a pretty picture. The next day the head missionary took us to a spot in the countryside that is only 10 miles away as the crow flies, but is an hour and a half drive through the river and over rolling hills. Salines Myett is a beautiful plateau surrounded by mountains. There are wide open spaces for children to play and run. His dream is to transplant the current orphanage to this location. The children live in “families” of 25-29 children with a set of caregiver parents and an “auntie”. The plan is to build a first wave of five new children’s homes. The homes measure 30’ x 50’ and house one “family”. That is cramped by US standards, but good by Haitian standards. I can see the day that several hundred children could live in a “children’s village” there. His dream has very quickly become our dream.
Moyes Eye Center has partnered with C3Missions to make this dream come true. The 1500 square foot homes are made completely out of concrete (wood won’t last in the tropics) and are expected to have a useful life of 20+ years. The homes will cost $15,000 apiece. To me this is an awesome investment opportunity….providing a home for 25+ kids for 20+ years….that is only 9 cents per child per day for a home to live in. Moyes Eye Center has purchased the property and will commit to building the first children’s home. One of our business partners and family has committed to a second home. Many of you have the resources and would like to be part of this life changing opportunity. A child in an orphanage can be sponsored for $40-75 per month. Tax deductible donations can be made through C3Missions (C3Missions.org). If this sparks an interest in you please call or e-mail me (amoyes@moyeseye.com). There is so much more I would like to share about this dream.
I have met and held children who have been found trying to feed themselves off of the trash dump. The New Testament book of James calls serving widows and orphans “pure religion”. This is a vision about giving these kids a home and a family. Please join me in making a real difference for these kids.
Blessings to you,
Andrew Moyes, MD
